This still life oil painting by Hasmik Khalafyan works in a tradition that rewards patience - the kind of painting where the longer you look, the more you find. Spread across a wide 140×70 cm canvas, the composition arranges its objects with deliberate care: a large black ceramic pot with ornate silver banding at centre, a cream linen cloth folded and draped to the left, a tall white pedestal dish carrying red grapes and ripe apples, and a scatter of polished spheres - deep green, violet, amber, pearl — along the right edge.
The technical challenge of this still life is the variety of surfaces, and Khalafyan meets it directly. The black pot absorbs light while holding a sharp highlight along its curve. The grapes are translucent and individually weighted. The spheres are fully rendered in the round, each with its own tonal logic. The draped linen, by contrast, is soft and matte — its folds described in quiet ochres and cool shadow. Against all of this, the dark green background holds the scene without competing with it.
It is a large work — wide rather than tall - and that horizontal format gives it the feel of a table seen straight on, close up, at eye level. Classical in its construction, confident in its execution.

Hasmik Khalafyan
Hasmik Khalafyan is a passionate and multifaceted artist.
Born and raised in Armenia, Hasmik lived in Moscow for almost 20 years before settling in the Netherlands, where her artistic career blossomed. She has been interested in art since childhood, attending art school and then rediscovering her love of painting.
Her work reflects a deep appreciation for experimentation, mixing different styles and techniques using materials such as oil and acrylic. Inspired by the beauty of Dutch flowers and the timeless charm of Delft paintings, her latest works combine traditional elements with contemporary touches.
Hasmik’s creativity extends to a variety of artistic endeavours including floral arrangements, handmade jewellery, felting and batik on scarves. Hasmik also shares her love of art by teaching children every Sunday at the Armenian Community School in The Hague, nurturing creativity in the next generation.
In January 2025, Hasmik’s works was featured in the Naarden Art Fair ‘In volle bloei’.
