With Taming (2023), Sergey Khachatryan (Serkhach) ventures into a more symbolic and dynamic territory, where the raw energy of horses becomes a metaphor for human will, freedom, and control. Three intertwined horses, their forms outlined with bold linear contours and filled with vibrant patches of color, surge forward in a composition that pulses with rhythm and tension. Their flowing manes and muscular bodies merge into an almost abstract design, balancing between representation and symbolism.
This work marks a departure from the intimate depictions of Armenian village life seen in earlier canvases such as Autumn (2021) and Shokhik and Ani (2022). Instead of domestic calm, Taming embodies movement, vitality, and struggle, placing Khachatryan in dialogue with artistic traditions of Expressionism and Symbolism. The expressive line work recalls the dynamism of Franz Marc and the Blue Rider group, while the fusion of abstract geometry and figuration evokes affinities with Pablo Picasso’s Cubist horses and Marc Chagall’s dreamlike bestiaries.
